About Open Minded Mic

Hadar, The Open Minded Mic “Mascot”

We produce, organize and present programs where talent has the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. What makes our program unique are the range of presentations, expert coaching, potential to perform in large events and showcases, and we manage all aspects of the production.

We also work hard to match the talent to the needs and expectations of the facility or organization. A non-profit organization or house of worship may do very well with an “Anything Goes” night when home grown talent presents an array of song, instrumental music, dance, standup comedy, poetry reading or anything else that’s available and of interest. A small restaurant, bar or club could be a good match for acoustic music or jazz and a large club can benefit from large musical ensembles, dancers, magicians or rock bands. We organize the event for your needs.

For regularly scheduled Open Minded Mic events we serve Ocean County, Atlantic County, Cape May County, Salem County and Burlington County in Southern New Jersey. For non-profit and religious institutions holding a one-time fund raiser we work throughout New Jersey, New York City and vicinity, Philadelphia, southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware.

We’re committed to supporting the performing arts and all forms of expressive art. This is the joy in life, the heartbreak and what it is to be human and alive. We give new and emerging talent a place to perform, discover a little more about who they are and be discovered by others. This may create an opportunity for a wonderful career in performing. No matter what your goals, it feels great to perform, and it feels great to watch someone perform, so join us.

About The FoundersIn 1974 Dave Meltz and John Oelkers met while working in a stage production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” John was the lead guitarist and music director and Dave played the role of Jesus and ultimately took over as stage director. These two young men, then in their early twenties, came to this production as young veterans with years of music performance and stage experience behind them. The show was a great success and so has been the friendship that has sustained and deepened over the years.

John Oelkers is a professional guitarist, has performed in bands such as Hero, Crisis and currently appears in the acoustic duo, Wave. John also teaches guitar, has written and recorded many songs, and is highly sought for his ability to “sit in with the best.” John is experienced on stage, comfortable with the mic and will help performers get the best out of their opportunity at center stage.

Dave “Professor” Meltz is a retired school psychologist and college professor who has spent much time on stage and writing music. While working with high school students he developed innovative music programs to give students more opportunities to perform. He’s an experienced teacher and therapist, plays guitar and bass, writes music and lyrics and like John, very much at home at center stage.
